About Programme

Biomaterials are the name given to the materials that serve as a support for the tissues and organs in the human body to carry out their functions, completely assuming their place or functions. They do not have to be of biological origin; they can be made of metal, ceramics, natural or synthetic polymers and their composites. Of these, he made contributions to the production of carbon nanotubes, change in the surface properties of materials and products, increase conductivity, orientation and strengthening. 4-dimensional materials, that is, shape-memory materials that change their shape and size over time and in response to the stimuli they receive, have opened up many new areas, ranging from cell layer engineering. Hydrogels of natural and artificial origin, medical-quality 3D printing films and graphene have contributed in many different directions. In particular, carbon structures have taken on an important function in creating surfaces that prevent cell adhesion.

Advances in biomaterials have progressed so much that applications have even begun to be treated by 3D printing directly on the patient on the operating table of the injured tissue that we saw in the movies a few years ago. Tissue models are the development and use of some kind of tissue engineering product to represent a test animal, not to implant it in the body. Microfluidic technologies also provide an opportunity to study interactions very quickly with very few samples, as well as to screen for drugs. At this point, MEMS technology has also started to make contributions. Thanks to this technology, it is possible to make nano- and micro-sized patterns on materials and transfer these patterns to other pure materials. In fact, human tissue actually transmits messages to cells and tissues through small physical and chemical elements at this level. Sometimes these messages act by turning into biological and chemical signals, and sometimes they act physically. If an implant can be decorated with such signal elements, processes such as interaction with tissue, healing speed can be significantly improved. The topics that will be offered to students in our field on education and research are listed as follows:

- Polymeric, Metallic and Ceramic Biomaterials; 3D Printing, Micro-Nano Patterned Surfaces, Hydrogels, Vascularization, Wound Healing, In Vitro Tissue Models, Microfluidic Systems
- Tissue Engineering (Bone, Cartilage, Heart and Skeletal November, Vascular, Nerve, Skin, Ocular Tissues, etc.), 3D Tissue Scaffolds, Stem Cells
- Controlled Drug Tuesday, Targeted Nanoparticles, Functional Polymer, Bioactive Scaffolds, Surface Modification
- Gait Analysis, Motor Learning and Adaptation, Orthopedic Biomechanics, Sports Biomechanics, Instrumentation
- Medical Simulation, Hemodialysis Membranes, Serious Gaming, Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality
- Within the scope of our program, it is also possible to conduct R & D studies on biomaterials using freshly frozen cadavers.

These mentioned methods will also show their effects more clearly in the coming years and will make important contributions to the field of health.

History
The field of biomaterials has started to gain visibility and importance since the late 1970s in the world and in our country. The first studies on this subject started with implants that did not have living components, and in time, with the addition of proteins and enzymes, and then cells, tissue engineering and later regenerative medicine fields were established. At Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University, studies in this field started in the 2010s through courses, Acıbadem Biomaterials Application and Research Center was established in 2020, and again in 2020, a Biomaterials Master's Program was established under the ACU Institute of Science.
Qualification Awarded
Biomaterials Master of Science (MSc)
Admission Requirements
In order to get acceptance for the Biomaterials Master of Science program, candidates must graduate from the departments of Medical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Chemistry, Physics, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy with at least a bachelor's degree (4 years). (Applications coming from outside of these departments will be evaluated by the oral exam to be held by the relevant committee. Candidates who score 70 and above will be considered successful).
Application requirements are updated in the announcements tab of the Graduate School of Sciences.

Higher Grade Transition
Those who complete the Master's Program can start a doctorate program in life sciences and engineering.
Graduation Requirements
Students who have been successful in the compulsory courses, who have successfully completed the thesis study and thesis defense exam are considered successful provided that the overall grade point average is at least the passing grade determined by the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The graduates can work as academicians at universities or as researchers in public/private institutions, as well as as manufacturers and researchers in the medical device industry.
Assessment and Grading
The methods such as exams, assignments and projects are used for the assesment and grading the learning objectives determined for each course.

The specific criteria for each course are determined in the information package of the courses.
